Some entertaining gambling tales...
June 10, 2008

We all hear bad beat stories, sadly, on a daily basis!! But over the years I have heard some that have stuck in my mind as they had a twist in the tale!! They are all true and I hope you find them as entertaining as I did! Though for some of the people involved “entertaining” is probably not the first word that sprang to mind!!

"There's Always One!!" by Priscilla Ford
April 8, 2008

The banter and chit chat at the poker table is definitely one of the things that makes this wonderful game unique. It is probably the only place where you can have police men and gangsters, models and brain surgeons, all sitting together, and while they sit there they are all relatively equal, the tags they carry that define them in their everyday life are removed and for a few hours at least they share the same hopes and intentions and are just poker players. Poker embraces every walk of life, and it is this eclectic mix of personalities and professions that gives the game one of its most interesting facets, it ensures that every time you play you will be able to mix with all kinds of people, people you may never meet otherwise and though we all play poker to win money this aspect of the game is certainly an added bonus.

Passing Pocket Pairs
March 22, 2008

| It is strange but true that passing a pair of pocket aces before the flop is sometimes correct in no limit hold’em.
This may seem contrary to all known hold’em tactics. But tactics come second to strategy – and in super satellites the overriding strategy is to win a seat, not to finish first in the competition.

"The Mysticism of Cards" by Priscilla Ford
February 15, 2008

Cards have been used for centuries as a tool for fortune telling. There is much debate about the true origins, though it is generally believed that the first fortunes were told with an ordinary deck of playing cards and that tarot cards came later and it is one of the few forms of fortune telling that is still practiced, and given credence to, today. Though I personally know very little about card reading as I understand it the basis is that the aura of a person will determine the cards that come out and through this, a person who is trained can interpret their future.

7 Card Stud & Limit PLAY - By Priscilla Ford
January 7, 2008

7 card stud is, unfortunately, a dying game. 10 years ago when I first started playing poker around half of all games and competitions were 7 card stud, although in England this was always played as pot limit. 20 years ago all games were 7 card stud and flop games such as hold’em and omaha were extremely rare.

Bad Beat Stories...
November 12, 2007

| Bad beat stories, tales of poker woe in which a hand turns from a cast-iron cert into a disaster, are not normally worth telling.
But here is one which occurred in a cash game which turned into a real nightmare.

"Internet 'Counter-tells"' by Kathleen K. Watterson

I’ve written previously in this column and elsewhere about the ways in which online play is more inherently card-based than people-based — meaning that, in general, it’s best to bluff less, trap more, and let the cards dictate. Most experienced cyberspace players have reached the conclusion that solid online play is more straightforward than traditional live action and less reliant on tells, people-reading or fancy moves.
