$250,000 Guaranteed Report

August 28, 2008

On the 23rd of September 2007 the International Poker Network ran it’s largest ever tournament. At 19:00 GMT (21:00CET) the $250,000 Guaranteed tournament started with over 930 players, this meant a massive total prize-pool of $279,600.

The tournament started with Deep Chip Stacks, and a new innovative Blind Structure which has been praised by professionals and amateurs alike, where the rate at which the blinds increase, slows down, allowing for more skilful play towards the end of the tournament.

After approximately 2 hours nearly two-thirds of the field had been eliminated and the event started to heat up, as players got close to the prize money, with 80 places paid, “fiddle284” holding Ac Qs and having hit top pair on the board, however “heightenm11” was holding Pocket Aces, and thus “fiddle284” was eliminated on the 1 place out of the money.

Finally after a further 2 hours we were down to the final table, with everyone on the table taking home a minimum $3,350, but with the possibility of winning $68,500 there was still a lot to play for. The final table proceeded quite quickly, and with only 48 hands separating 10th place and 1st place, the game was aggressive and intense.

Once 8 more players had been eliminated it was between “feccia2” and “--SVINET--” for a heads-up confrontation. With “--SVINET--” entering the heads up battle with nearly 1.6 million in chips; against “feccia2” holding 1.2 million in chips; we were expecting a long heads-up battle, especially considering the blinds were only approximately 2% of their respective chip stacks. In spite of this the mêlée lasted a brief yet important 4 minutes; with one critical hand changing the outcome, and massively shifting the balance of the tournament. The hand went as follows:-

“feccia2”         is dealt

“--SVINET--” is dealt

“--SVINET--” then calls from the Big Blind, and straight away “feccia2” raises a further 60,000 chips.

Next the Flop:

After the flop betting ensues with “feccia2” betting 60,000 chips into a pot of 180,000; and “--SVINET--” flat calls.

The Turn:

“feccia2” acting first again, checks the turn, and “--SVINET--” this time puts in a 180,000 chip bet, which “feccia2” then calls.

The River:

“feccia2” once again checks, and “--SVINET--” views this as weakness and pushes a further 900,000 chips into the centre of the table; putting himself all-in. “feccia2” then reacted quickly, and instantly called. This then left “feccia2” with over 2.45 million in chips, while “--SVINET--” held under 380,000 chips; this represents a 5:1 chip lead; and now it was just a matter of finishing “--SVINET--” off. After only 6 more hands “--SVINET--” was finally defeated holding two pair, with “feccia2” holding a straight to the Ace.
