"New to Internet Poker?" by Mick McCloskey

August 28, 2008

Just a few observations to share.

Although fairly new to the net, I am not entirely new to poker, having played regularly in the U.S.A. and on the European tour for a number of years.

My Internet life began about three months ago and in that time I have played on a number of different sites.

I have played in cash games, single table tournaments and multi table tournaments and have had some success in all three disciplines. I have even tried playing more than one table at a time, but I find that's not for me. I’m not saying that you should not do it, but I find it easier to concentrate on one table at a time. For me, it’s easier to keep track of what's going on, as regards betting and raising, who’s in the pot and what sort of game and what sort of cards they are playing.

Even playing one table, I have pressed the wrong buttons and have run out of time trying to make and raise bets. One time I raised a pot about 2,000 and, when one player re-raised all in for another 120,I folded! All the players must have thought I'd gone crazy. Ah well, maybe I'll get the hang of it yet!

As regards keeping track, I think it's a good idea to make notes on players. In my regular online cash game I keep coming across the same players and have started to make notes on them, so I always have a good idea how they play and how good (or bad) they are. I keep a sheet of paper and jot down player names and give them marks 1-10,in two columns, for aggression and for hand selection. This basic information should give you a real good read on your opponents. You can also make other general notes on their play, as you see it. I find this also works in single table tournaments as you can come across the same players on a regular basis. It’s not so easy to do this in multi tables, so just give everyone equal respect until they prove to you that they don’t deserve it.  Even then be aware, bad players can still be dealt good hands. Basically, I think, good solid play, whether live or online will get the money in the long run.

So get in there, play well and good luck.
